Course description

Over the duration of the program, participants will embark on a comprehensive journey through the fascinating world of tree biology, pedology, pathology, and tree care measures. Through a series of engaging and interactive sessions, mornings will be dedicated to exploring the intricate nuances of tree biology, delving into topics such as growth patterns, nutrient uptake, and ecological interactions.

 
As the course progresses, participants will hone their skills in tree and plant identification, learning to discern key species and their unique features, and mastering the art of tree and plant selection based on site conditions, climate resilience, and aesthetic considerations.

Moreover, the program will include a captivating urban arboriculture exploration through the picturesque city of Ljubljana, providing participants with first-hand insights into urban forestry practices and the crucial role of green spaces in urban environments.

In the course the participants will explore how to:

  • Explain how basic biological principles dictate tree growth and development.
  • Develop confidence in identifying common trees and plants found in various landscapes
  • Diagnose soil properties to support tree growth and development.
  • Identify the most common urban tree species.
  • Understand the importance of “Right tree, right place, right way, right time”.
  • Identify the most important urban tree diseases and pests.
  • Perform tree assessment.
  • Evaluate the methods and guidelines for tree care measures.
 

 

 

Schedule of the contents
DAY 1: Tree Biology and Pedology

  • Upon arrival, participants will be warmly welcomed and introduced to the course.
  • The morning session will delve into the fascinating world of tree biology, exploring topics such as growth patterns, nutrient uptake, and ecological interactions through engaging group activities.
  • In the afternoon, we will shift our focus to pedology, examining the soil properties essential for healthy tree growth and sustainable land management.

DAY 2: Tree/plant ID and Selection

  • In the morning, participants will sharpen their skills in tree and plant identification, learning to recognize key species and their distinguishing features.
  • Through interactive group activities, they will develop confidence in identifying common trees and plants found in various landscapes.
  • The afternoon session will guide participants in the art of tree and plant selection, considering factors such as site conditions, climate resilience, and aesthetic appeal.

DAY 3: Tree Pathology

  • The morning session will explore the intricate world of tree pathology, unravelling the mysteries of diseases, pests, and other threats to tree health.
  • Participants will gain insights into diagnosing common tree ailments and implementing effective management strategies.
  • In the afternoon, group activities will provide opportunities for hands-on learning and collaboration.

DAY 4: Tree Care Measures

  • Participants will delve into the realm of tree care measures and techniques, discovering best practices for pruning, fertilisation, and pest management in the morning session.
  • Through interactive demonstrations and discussions, they will acquire practical skills for promoting tree health and longevity.
  • In the afternoon, group activities will reinforce learning outcomes and foster a sense of community among participants.

DAY 5: Urban Arboriculture & Sightseeing - Ljubljana

  • The final day will be dedicated to exploring urban arboriculture in the picturesque city of Ljubljana.
  • Participants will embark on a guided walk through the city's parks and alleys, learning about urban forestry practices and the importance of green spaces in urban environments.
  • The day will culminate with closing remarks and the presentation of certificates, celebrating the successful completion of the course.
